When I returned to the pastor’s office, he seemed different. Gone was the glib spokesman. Now, he seemed almost repentant.

“Thank you for making time for me today.” He motioned for me to sit in a brown leather chair with slender wooden legs.

“I have to admit, I was surprised you called.”

He nodded quietly. “It was after I read the newspaper that I knew I had gone too far in protecting Joyce. I now feel if I had been a little more transparent, there is a possibility she would be alive today. Please understand that I take any kind of confidential information seriously and want to protect the person who shares it with me. Also, and I’m not proud of this, I didn’t take Joyce’s story as wholly true.”

Even though I still resented his statement about women and their tendencies toward hysteria, I reflected on the morning she came into the radio station. I thought she was a raving lunatic, and it was obvious so had he. As a pastor, Rob Roy was supposed to be listening and not judging. At least that was what they said over the door, right? Judge not, lest ye be judged?

“Well then, I guess I appreciate you calling me back to tell me the entire story, not just the one clouded by your opinion of women in general. So, what did she tell you?”

Rob Roy stood and walked over to his bookshelf as if he were about to take out a reference volume to use in an upcoming sermon. Instead, he stuck both hands in the pockets of his tan Sansabelt pants. “I know I told you her feelings about the death of his first wife, but it was more than that. It incensed her. So much so, I worried it would get her in trouble.”

I wished I’d called Mary first. She could have used information like this, and I wasn’t so sure he would feel comfortable sharing this in a police station. If word got around that he was violating a parishioner’s trust, it could put him out of business, and from the looks of the attendance at Living Word, business was good.

“I don’t think I know any more than you do, but there was one part that astounded me. She said that as Holden told her about the accident, he got excited. He was telling it like it was a ghost story around the campfire. He even smiled in parts.”

“He did?” I couldn’t imagine him sharing the story of his first wife’s death with a smile. It was creepy to start, and it didn’t do much to prove his innocence.

“Yes, and that was what scared Joyce so much. His entire attitude toward his wife’s grisly death was shocking. And one other thing. He said his wife was terrified of heights. He had a tough time getting her up to that altitude. My question here is, why would a woman afraid of heights stand so close to the edge of a mountain?”

Holden had told me just the opposite.
